Chapter 5

Finley had to give Cash his road-trip planning props. Instead of their trip to Chicago feeling like a never-ending journey, it had felt more like an adventure. After leaving Asheville that morning, they’d ventured to Charleston, West Virginia. She’d heard so many negative things about the state that she’d been a little apprehensive about being there.

Her fears had been unfounded. Everyone they encountered had seemed genuinely authentic in their greetings and treatment. Cash fielded question after question about the food truck. She understood people’s interest. The chocolate-colored mobile kitchen was state of the art. Stainless steel, generators, fryers, grill, refrigerator, freezer, ovens, and a sink. Honestly, she wasn’t sure how it all fit together, but it did, and allowed for comfortable maneuvering inside.

They’d had lunch at a southern cooking restaurant Cash claimed he’d seen featured on the Food Network channel. Plaques on the wall confirmed it. She’d eaten her weight in ribs, pulled pork, sweet potato casserole, collard greens, baked beans, and smack-yo’-momma mac and cheese. Anyone watching her probably thought she was eating for two.

All of that goodness had put her into a food coma, and she’d slept the entire three-hour drive to Dayton, Ohio. After an overnight stay in the Buckeye State, they’d hit the road again. Spending several hours in Indianapolis, Indiana, they finally arrived in Chicago Thursday afternoon.

After checking into the hotel, they decided to explore The Windy City a bit. The ride-share car dropped them at Navy Pier. The delicious aromas wafting from Giordano’s—a Chicago-style pizza restaurant—greeted them the second they entered. Forgoing eating for now, they strolled the massive space. Finley made a note to purchase some cheese popcorn from Garrett before they left.

Cash purchased a VIP ticket to the Centennial Wheel, but when Finley saw the gondola had a glass bottom, she grew anxious about boarding. Cash kissed the back of her head and told her not to worry because he wouldn’t let anything happen to her. It was enough to steady her quaking nerves. Settling into the plush leather seat, she said a little prayer to cover them both—just in case.

The iconic Ferris Wheel soared nearly two-hundred-feet into the air, providing a breathtaking three hundred sixty-degree view of the Chicago skyline and Lake Michigan. The view through the floor wasn’t bad either. A monitor told the history of the Navy Pier and the wheel, but Finley paid little attention to it.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded. “Perfect.”

“Yes, you are,” he said, kissing the back of her hand.

No one spoke for a long while. Finley could tell Cash was deep in his thoughts because he absently smoothed the pad of this thumb back and forth over the back of her hand. Sliding a glance in his direction, his solemn expression suggested he was a hundred miles away. What was racing through his head?

“Do you have any regrets?” she said, drawing Cash’s attention.

“Regrets?” His brows furrowed. “About what?”

“Us stepping over that friendship line.”

“No.” He watched her a moment. “Do you?”

His tone sounded a little grim, like he all but expected her to say yes.
